Two of my favorite series of movies, The Lion King
series and The Avengers series, are from the Disney franchise and the Marvel
franchise.
My love for the Disney franchise is attached to the warmth
of my childhood memories that still linger in my life. I learned about the meaning
of imagination and the magical power that creative imagination has from the Disney
franchise. This series taught me how I can choose to be brave when I want to (I
still say “Hakuna Matata” when things get tough). It helped me to understand the
anthropological idea of connectedness or interconnectedness in life. I specifically
mention The Lion King series from the Disney franchise as it has taught
me to respond to the true calling of life and to choose who I am over and over
again, against what the world wants me to be.
My love for the Marvel franchise has its roots in The
Avengers series. I know superheroes can be seen far from reality but somehow
Marvel has conceptualized and directed the series so well that I took away life
lessons from the movies. The superheroes in The Avengers series are funny and emotional.
They have their doubts, they fight, and they fall, but at the end of the day, they
stand up individually or together (like in Avengers Endgame) and teach
viewers like us that we can be superheroes too. We are all superheroes in our daily
mundane life in some way.
I am also a big fan of the Korean series. I am moved by the
amazing stories and direction that these series have and the brilliant performances
of the actors who make their pain and joy so believable on screen that it
almost feels real and personal. I am also fascinated by the animated movies by Studio
Ghibli. The cinematography, setting, and plot of the movies always leave me inspired.
Genres from thriller to horror to romantic to misery-ridden
traumatic stories to comedy, all appeal to me.
I am an involved viewer. Movies and series touch me in a way
where they become a part of me. I indulge in the dialogues and dive into the roles
of the characters. I don’t just watch a movie or series I become a part of the
story while watching. This allows me to look at the story and have my own point
of view, analyze the point of view of the director, and relate the stories and characters
to everyday situations of life and people. I am not just a viewer when I watch movies or series,
I am also an observer, a writer, a poet, and a storyteller.
